Visitation to Mary
Saint Luke tells us that Mary “set out in great haste” after the annunciation, in order to be with her cousin Elizabeth. Here we see the kind of heart that Mary had, so filled with concern for others and eager to serve. Traveling was not easy in those days, so we know that it meant even more effort and sacrifice.
Elizabeth’s glad shout reflects beautifully the joy that Mary brings to the soul. The Blessed Mother is like a catalyst for our relationship with Christ. The person that recognises Christ will experience the joy that Elizabeth does in the presence of Mary. With her, we will grow into a far deeper relationship than we would on our own. Let us continually ask her to bring Christ into our lives.
Let us be more like Mary and be inspired to want to help others. To have the grace to perceive others’ needs and overcome our self-centredness.
